While both companies make excellent graphics cards, Nvidia has been consistently ahead in the market for years, with a much larger market share than AMD. This is partly due to the fact that Nvidia has had the most powerful GPU for the current generation of graphics cards, the RTX 4090, which AMD does not have a competitive answer to.

Another area where Nvidia is currently ahead of AMD is in artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. Nvidia’s GPUs are better at running AI-generated tasks than AMD’s, as demonstrated by recent testing on Stable Diffusion, an AI image creator tool. While AMD’s RDNA 3 line of graphics cards held up well in the tests, even their best card was miles behind Nvidia in AI-related tasks.

While the majority of consumers buy graphics cards based on budget and gaming capabilities, professionals who use them for AI or machine learning workloads tend to choose Nvidia cards over AMD. Nvidia’s lead over AMD extends to areas such as ray tracing and DLSS, with Nvidia still ahead of AMD in both. However, AMD’s RX 7900 XTX is now outperforming Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Ti in ray tracing, and AMD is making strides in catching up in other areas as well.

If AMD wants to remain competitive with Nvidia, they will need to focus on improving their performance in AI and other non-gaming areas. While AMD has made significant progress in recent years, they still have a ways to go to catch up to Nvidia.
